Prime Rules: Unveiling Creativity in the Heart of Hong Kong

Capturing the dynamism of creativity in action and delving into the minds of creatives discussing their work is a dream come true—a reality we've lived for many years. What better way to embrace a creative life than to be fully immersed in it?

Our recent film, part of the InvestHK business series, focuses on the Canadian-headquartered, architecture and design firm B+H. It gave us a unique opportunity to explore the thinkers shaping our living spaces.

Despite a format challenge— the film being co-headed by three partners—it felt only right to let each voice resonate, unfolding their adventurous start in Hong Kong and the journey to a flourishing branch. This departure from our traditional "one head represents the company" framework gave us a multi-faceted narrative presented by Andrew Humphreys, Catherine Siu, and Barry Day.

The task at hand was to crisscross the interviews, creating a harmonious choir of voices detailing their mission, unique selling points, and experiences in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Meticulous planning ensued, with carefully crafted interview questions and thorough briefings, fostering the necessary rapport for a relaxed filming experience.

Our goal was to showcase this dynamic team in action, revelling in what they do. The strategy involved imagining mini scenarios around this concept: Catherine providing interior design advice in the material library at the B+H’s CHIL studio, Barry tracing the Shenzhen bio-morphic, river-inspired Natural History Museum, and the team engaging in a creative chat in the North Point Oil Street Art Space.

In terms of cinematography, our vision was crystal clear: a clean, professional, and "photographic" design for the interviews. To achieve this, we designed a complete interview set with a grey Colorama backdrop. The use of prime lenses and ample diffusion became our tools of choice, providing the imagery with a rich look. Recognising the supremacy of prime lenses for a cinematic feel, our approach was geared towards capturing the essence of B+H and creating a visual narrative that mirrors the vibrancy and creativity inherent in their work. In the world of filmmaking, prime lenses do rule.
